Stagwell Group, the advertising agency holding group operated by Mark Penn, a former advisor to Bill and Hillary Clinton, is actively looking to buy adtech companies as it continues to grow through acquisitions. Penn's theory is that by bringing such adtech in-house, Stagwell can offer more self-service software to advertisers who want it while also shrinking those clients' ad prices and expanding its own margins. Challenger brand Stagwell is competing for bigger contractsPenn founded Stagwell Group in 2015 with $250 million in funding from investors, including former Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer. Stagwell recently made a near-$700-million bid for S4 Capital, another challenger ad company founded by longtime WPP CEO Martin Sorrell, The Wall Street Journal reported. Jim Cramer names four tailwinds helping stocks rip higher

The major indexes busted out of a slump on Thursday and CNBC's Jim Cramer pinpointed several unexpected market tailwinds, telling investors to look for this kind of action instead of obsessing over news from the Federal Reserve. "I'd rather look for these unexpected tailwinds that affect individual companies. According to Cramer, the return of Japan as a notable player in mergers and acquisitions is another tailwind. Cramer said activist investor Nelson Peltz's proxy fight to get into Disney 's boardroom could lead to higher value for the company. Above all, Cramer reminded investors not to trade, but to research and identify stocks they believe in for the long term.

US District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan announced that convicted former FTX CEO Sam Bankman will be sentenced on March 28, 2024. Meanwhile, Bankman-Fried will return to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he’s been held since August. Bankman-Fried is also “friendly” with Genaro García Luna, the former head of Mexico’s FBI, who is awaiting sentencing for drug trafficking, this person said. Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, arrives at court as lawyers push to persuade the judge overseeing his fraud case not to jail him ahead of trial, at a courthouse in New York, U.S., August 11, 2023. The regulations are expected to provide some relief to inmates, who feared they could potentially be hauled back into prison when the public health emergency expires on May 11. Criminal justice and civil rights groups have lobbied the Justice Department and the White House to change those rules to prevent inmates from being returned to prison en masse. The BOP will still be able to impose "proportional and escalating sanctions," including a return to prison, on inmates who commit infractions. Of those, the department said only a fraction of one percent were returned to prison due to new criminal conduct.
HARARE, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Zimbabwean police on Saturday fired teargas at an opposition party gathering in Harare and arrested 25 of its members, including two members of parliament, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) said. The arrests come after a wave of politically motivated violence against opposition supporters in rural Zimbabwe, raising fears of repression ahead of the presidential election this year. Police confirmed the arrests of members of the Citizens Coalition for Change, Zimbabwe's main opposition political party, and said a detailed statement would be released following investigations. Police allegedly fired teargas at the gathering, and beat up several opposition members before they were bundled into a police truck, she added. The opposition party, born out of the old Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), enjoys massive urban support and is seen as a threat to ZANU-PF's 43-year-old stranglehold on power.

Tower Rock, a limestone formation in the middle of the Mississippi River, is newly accessible by foot. The Mississippi River is experiencing historic low levels, likely due to climate change. Tower Rock was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1970. The region, including the Ohio River and the Upper Mississippi River valleys, has not received enough rain to sustain usual water levels, Insider's Morgan McFall-Johnsen and Paola Rosa-Aquino reported. These variable river conditions are consistent with scientists' predictions of climate change creating more unpredictable weather events.
